Apart from her U.S. treatment, Fawcett has traveled to Germany six times seeking cancer treatment, actor Ryan O'Neal -- Fawcett's partner and the father of her son, Redmond -- recently told People.

Ursula Jacob of Germany's Alpenpark Clinic has treated Fawcett. In an interview with Access Hollywood, Jacob says that, in Germany, Fawcett was given "natural supplements and also immune treatments" that were tailored to her specific case.

2) Limit or Avoid Birth Control Pills

Even the weakest pill contains seven times the amount of estrogen naturally occurring in your body. Research has determined that the single greatest risk factor for future development of breast cancer is lifetime exposure of the breasts to estrogen. So it would appear that controlling the influence of estrogen on the breasts is the single most important method of primary breast cancer prevention.

It was not until 1905 that Theodoor Hendrik Van de Velde, a Dutch gynecologist, showed that women only ovulate once per menstrual cycle. In the 1920s, Kyusaku Ogino, a Japanese gynecologist, and Hermann Knaus, from Austria, independently discovered that ovulation occurs about fourteen days before the next menstrual period. Thus the Knaus-Ogino, or the Rhythm (or Calendar) method, is one of the 'biological' forms of birth control.

Using this method, a couple avoids unprotected sexual intercourse just before, during and just after ovulation. Ovulation occurs about 14 days before the start of a woman's period. Since sperm can live inside the vagina for up to three days, and an egg can stay fertile in the fallopian tubes and vagina for up to three days, unprotected intercourse must be avoided for more than just the day of ovulation. To be safe, a woman should abstain from sex (or use a condom) five days before ovulation, and five days after. The effectiveness of the rhythm method depends on how meticulously it is practised. A study, published in the June 1998 issue of The Journal of Reproductive Medicine, found the technique had an impressive 96 per cent effectiveness rate in preventing pregnancy, comparing favourably to other methods of contraception.

The Rhythm Method requires that a woman keep track of three things: her core body temperature, the fertile days of her cycle as measured by a calendar, and her cervical secretions. This may prove challenging to those women with irregular menstrual cycles who may have to address this issue first. Let’s face it, it's a lot easier for a physician to prescribe a birth control pill that will also ‘regulate’ a woman’s cycle than it is to discuss natural forms of birth control, and to treat the underlying cause of menstrual irregularity. Although it is more challenging to discuss this issue, especially with younger women, I have found that it is always worth the effort to get someone off the Pill. 3) Limit Your Exposure to Xeno-Estrogens – like Ethinyl Estradiol used in contraceptives, or Methoxychlor (a pesticide that replaced the well-known DDT), as well as industrial pollutants such as Bisphenol-A used as a plasticizer, all man made radiation, pesticides and herbicides, as well as many toxic cleaning products that mimic estrogen with their molecular structure. Since hormone-disrupting chemicals mimic estrogen, it is suspected they are linked to the growing incidence of breast cancer. While researchers are only beginning to understand the health effects of these chemicals, they have already observed that hormone disruptions can result in damage to the brain, immune and reproductive systems. Very few ingredients are tested for reproductive or developmental effects caused by hormone disrupting chemicals.

In my opinion, the best ways to avoid toxic chemicals are as follows: use non-bleached coffee filters, paper, napkins and toilet tissue. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (E.P.A.) has determined that using conventional bleached coffee filters alone can result in a lifetime exposure to dioxin that exceeds acceptable limits. Ask for office paper products whitened without chlorine. Use tampons and sanitary napkins made of organic cotton without chlorine. (The FDA detected dioxins and dozens of other substances in conventional tampons.) Look for ones that contain no chlorine, fragrance, wax, surfactants, rayon, etc.

Do not use chlorine bleach for household cleaning or laundry. Hydrogen peroxide is a safe alternative; it breaks down to water and oxygen. Bleaches made from Hydrogen Peroxide are sold in health food stores.

Use non-toxic household products. (For example, Lysol Disinfectant Spray may contain ortho-phenylphenol. This germ killer is carcinogenic, according to both the EPA and IARC.) You can find non-toxic products in your health food store. Use natural underarm deodorants that are free of dangerous chemicals. Avoid antiperspirants which contain aluminum, as it is toxic. In fact, avoid antiperspirants altogether as they inhibit detoxification of the breasts and chest area. Underarm perspiration is an important function that clears toxins out of this area.

Avoid fluoridated toothpaste (fluoride-free natural toothpaste is available at most health food stores). Avoid fluoridated water and all chemically treated tap water. Drink filtered, not city water that contains chlorine, or get a whole house filter. Bathe or shower in “clean” water. Fluoride can be just as poisonous as lead, and just slightly less poisonous than arsenic. Researchers conducting a study at the Catalan Institute of Oncology in Barcelona analyzed data from six European countries and found a 19 per cent increase of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma cases among people who said they used hair dye. The risk increased to 26 per cent for those who coloured their hair 12 or more times a year. Indeed, more than a dozen studies link hair dyes with cancer, yet there are no warning labels on these products. 4) Regulate Your Estrogen Metabolism – Since most breast tumours are estrogen receptor positive, it implies that they are partially fed by estrogen. Some estrogens are cancer protective, while some are cancer permissive – they are not all created equal. Keep your E-2/16 ratio in check. A simple urine test can provide you with this information. The lower the amount of (bad) estrogen, the slower the potential growth. Therapeutic use of I3C or DIM is clinically shown to be very beneficial for keeping your E2/16 ratio in a healthy zone. The most important advice for preventing cancer is to maintain and enhance your liver’s ability to metabolize estrogens from different sources. This can be done through proper nutrition and requires very specific concentrations of nutrients and occasional liver support and detoxification. This is a continuous and life-long prevention program. The ultimate goal here is to improve your estrogen metabolism.

Bryonia Alba (Wild Hops) – A well know liver aid for centuries. It also happens to be a superb remedy for pain in breasts at menstrual period since it helps with estrogen metabolism. Carduus Marianus (St. Mary's Thistle) – The action of this medication is centred in the liver and portal system. It has a specific relation to the vascular system and varicose veins often seen as a consequence of abuse of alcoholic beverages. Cardus works very well to alleviate pelvic congestion usually occurring with endometriosis.

Chelidonium Majus (Celandine) - A prominent liver remedy, covering many of the direct symptoms of that organ. The patient will have an orange or yellow pigmentation of her skin, and, not surprisingly, frequent pain under the inferior angle of the right scapula due to gallstones or inflamed gall bladder. This patient will most likely suffer from spastic pains and lameness in single parts. She will suffer from great general lethargy and will avoid activity of any sort.

Natrum Sulphuricum (Sulphate of Sodium) - A liver remedy, especially indicated where the complaints are due to living in damp houses or basements. These patients are worse in rainy weather, water in any form. They feel every change from dry to wet; cannot even eat plants grown near water, nor fish. They always feel best in warm, dry air. They frequently have swollen ankles due to their sluggish liver function.

Nux Vomica or Colubriana (Poison-nut) - Nux is the remedy for many of the conditions frequently associated with modern life. The typical Nux patient is rather thin, quick, active, nervous, and irritable. This patient does a good deal of mental work; has mental strains and leads a sedentary life (found in prolonged office work, with its cares and anxieties). This indoor life and mental strain seeks stimulants, coffee, and wine, usually in excess.

5) Exercise – Studies show that three to four hours per week of regular exercise can decrease your risk of breast cancer by up to 50 per cent. Lean body mass (muscle) does not generate estrogen like fatty tissue. Swimming laps, aerobics, and running are considered strenuous. Vigorous fitness training of sufficient intensity is an effective modulator of mammary angiogenesis. However any form of exercise will affect the endocrine system by balancing one’s hormone levels, increasing the levels of HGH (human growth hormone) naturally while aiding the lymphatic system in detoxification of the body. Physical exercise represents a simple, non-invasive, non-chemical, inexpensive means of cancer prevention.

6) Nutrition – Eating a low saturated fat / high fibre diet is shown to be beneficial for breast health. Supplement with ground flaxseed as it contains lignans that bind to estrogens in the digestive tract and cleanse them from your system. Eat foods high in anti-oxidants (vitamins A, C, E, selenium, beta carotene). Preferred foods include: deeply coloured vegetables and fruits like green leafy vegetables, kale, carrots, yams, sweet potatoes, broccoli, and cauliflower, brussel sprouts, collards, cabbage, citrus, berries, nuts and seeds.

Avoid excessive amounts of sugar, fat, alcohol, caffeine – all of which decrease immune system function and may contribute to cancer. Obesity, and high levels of insulin in the blood also increase your risk of cancer.

My personal preference for a cancer protective diet is a plant based diet. The typical Western diet with its incessant emphasis on protein is one of the major causes of cancer and cardiovascular disease: the two leading causes of death.

Animal protein, including dairy, is full of hormones, antibiotics, and feeds that are given to livestock to make them grow fast (after all we’re not buying cows and chickens based on their personality traits – we purchase them by weight). Have you ever wondered why the average size of a chicken breast has increased eightfold in the past fifty years? Surely it is not because we are being nice to chickens – they are grown on steroids and we consume this flesh.

Plant-based diets are much safer, with less hormonal influence and more minerals, vitamins and fiber that we all need. In his best selling book The China Study, T. Colin Campbell, PhD makes a very convincing argument in support of this, with fifty years of nutritional research regarding plant-based diets. I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in this subject.

7) Learn to do your own regular breast self-examinations A great majority of lumps are found by women themselves. A health care professional should examine any changes noticed. Women are generally reluctant to do a breast self-exam and for many the experience is frustrating – you may feel things but not know what they mean. However, the more you examine your breasts, the more you will learn about them and the easier it will become for you to tell if something unusual has occurred. Try to get in the habit of doing breast self-examination at least once a month to familiarize yourself with how your breasts normally look and feel. Examine yourself several days after your period ends, when your breasts are least likely to be swollen and tender. If you are no longer having periods, choose a day that's easy to remember, such as the first or last day of the month.

8) Learn to say “No” – People who do things for others before they look after their own needs, must learn to say NO. Start to look after yourself before giving all to others. Be assertive in a positive way. The common mental thread in cancer patients is unfulfilled passion that had been suppressed for many years. This pattern of suppression would repeat itself over their lifetime. Oddly enough, studying piano later in life, or fulfilling another previously unfulfilled passion, has an amazing transformational effect.

9) Check Your Thyroid – Hypothyroidism precedes most breast disease. By correcting this problem as soon as the first symptoms develop you will decrease the risk factors and improve your breast health. Women are eight times more likely to suffer from a dysfunctional thyroid than men. Most thyroid conditions start in the perimenopausal and menopausal stages, when the endocrine system experiences many changes. A woman with an underactive thyroid may experience one or a combination of symptoms such as: fatigue, dry skin, constipation, cold intolerance including cold hands and feet, puffy face in the morning, swollen or drooping eyes, loss of hair or dry brittle hair, low sex drive, weight gain or inability to lose weight, memory loss, yellow discolouration on skin and palms, PMS, and muscle aches.

Proper assessment will lead to the correct diagnosis and treatment, but this is where things get a little tricky. Conventional blood tests examining your TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) levels may be misleading. Elevated TSH levels indicate an under active (hypo) thyroid, and low TSH levels indicate an over active (hyper) thyroid. Canadian ‘normal’ values are between 0.35 - 5.0. When the TSH levels are within this normal range, it is assumed that the thyroid gland is healthy and functioning normally. However, this “normal” range of health is much too broad.

In the U.S., TSH levels over 3.0 are considered hypothyroid. Some physicians suggest that TSH results of less than 1 and over 2, combined with the presence of clinical symptoms, shows that there is a thyroid dysfunction, which may require treatment. Two other possible tests are called “T4” and “T3”. It is not unusual to see T-3 and / or T-4 levels to be low or in the low end of ‘normal’, values thus requiring a more detailed look with additional saliva testing.

Keep in mind that pregnancy, estrogen replacement therapy, birth control pills, and especially stress may interfere with these results. Iodine and Selenium are co-factors in thyroid metabolism. A deficiency of these and other essential nutrients may be responsible for certain symptoms, as they all play a role in optimizing the health of the thyroid. Lacking these essential nutrients perpetuates a thyroid problem at the cellular level although TSH lab values may seem normal. Many people remain undiagnosed and untreated because many health practitioners rely solely on these numerical values. The most important factor – the patient’s symptoms – must be taken into consideration.

> Early detection is complex as signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer are easily mistaken for other, more common and less serious conditions

Screening might help to detect ovarian cancer before symptoms develop, early results from a UK trial suggest.

Some 83% of cancers were picked up, with almost half the tumours discovered at an early stage.

The disease is 90% curable when treated early, but because symptoms do not emerge until later it is often not detected until it is more advanced.

However, the Lancet Oncology study stresses it is too early to determine whether screening will save lives.

Experts analysed data from the first stage of the UK Collaborative Trial of Ovarian Cancer Screening (UKCTOCS) trial, which will assess over the next five years whether a national screening programme is a good idea.

Among the 100,000 post-menopausal women who took part, screening detected 58 cancers, but missed the disease in another 12 women.

Lead researcher Professor Ian Jacobs, director of the University College London Institute for Women's Health, said: "There is a long way to go before we have firm evidence as to whether or not screening is able to detect cancer early enough to save lives.

"It will also be essential to balance any benefits offered by screening with the downside, as it is recognised that screening can cause anxiety and lead to some unnecessary operations.''

Two methods : Two screening methods are being used in the UKCTOCS trial: a blood test or an ultrasound scan.

OVARIAN CANCER SYMPTOMS
Any of the following symptoms, if they occur on most days may suggest ovarian cancer:
Persistent pelvic and abdominal pain
Increased abdominal size/persistent bloating
Difficulty eating, and feeling full quickly
The blood test measures levels of a protein called CA125 that is often elevated in the blood of women who have ovarian cancer.

The ultrasound scan, which is carried out internally, is used to look for abnormalities in the ovaries.

In the blood test group 34 out of 38 cancers were detected, an accuracy rate of 89%. In total, 97 women in this group underwent surgery to remove their ovaries

In the ultrasound group 24 out of 32 cancers were detected, and accuracy rate of 75%. However, this test threw up a much higher number of "false positive" results, with a total of 845 women undergoing surgery to remove their ovaries.

The researchers believe this was partly due to ultrasound picking up benign ovarian cysts.

The research team found both methods of screening were encouragingly sensitive.

Calcium may cut colorectal cancer risk

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Calcium is vital for bone health, and may be important for reducing colorectal cancer risk, too, according to a U.S. study published on Monday.

Researchers at the U.S. National Cancer Institute tracked 293,907 men and 198,903 women and found that those with the highest calcium intake from dairy and other foods and from calcium supplements had the lowest colorectal cancer rates.

Yikyung Park of the NCI, part of the National Institutes of Health, said women in the highest fifth of calcium consumption had a 28 percent lower risk for colorectal cancer compared to those with the lowest fifth of calcium intake.

For men, those in the highest fifth had a 21 percent lower risk for colorectal cancer than those with the lower intake.

The researchers followed the people, who were between 50 and 71 years old, for seven years. The people in the study reported extensively on what they ate and what dietary supplements they took.

"For colorectal cancer, both calcium from diet and from supplements reduced the risk of colorectal cancer," Park, whose findings appear in the journal Archives of Internal Medicine, said in a telephone interview.

Foods with lots of calcium include diary products such as milk and yogurt and leafy green vegetables. Calcium is important in preventing osteoporosis.

The researchers said calcium may reduce abnormal growth in cells in the gastrointestinal tract and may help reduce damage to the mucous membrane in the large intestine.

I believe the natural world, too often, is terribly quick to attack or try to discredit the medical world. I believe that most natural practitioners have not learned the proper way to work with the medical world or the medical practitioner and vice versa.

Next, you must develop a battle plan; which includes roles for all participants, especially the one with the illness. This battle plan may include what I call my three-pronged approach.

Number One - Strategic use of the medical tools and techniques that are available. Included in this battle plan is the medical aspect. If the person's medical doctor is open, invite them to participate in this plan and use the amazing technological powers of today's modern medical system to glean as much information as possible about the person, the illness and also - if the person so chooses - to use medical treatments.

Number Two - Strategic use of, and proper and aggressive utilization of, the most effective natural and nutritional modalities and techniques. Below, is an example of a natural/medical battle plan that I have seen produce very positive results.

1. Aggressive Detoxification
By removing the toxins and poisons from our cells, tissues, blood and organs, we clear the way for the body to begin to heal and fight the Cancer on its own.

2. Upbuilding the Body

Dr. Heinicke states that the primary function of xeronine is to regulate the rigidity and shape of specific proteins. Since these proteins have different functions within the cells, this explains how the administration of Noni Juice causes an unbelievably wide range of physiological responses. "Some of the problems which drinking Noni Juice might favorably affect are: high blood pressure, menstrual cramps, arthritis, gastric ulcers, sprains, injuries, mental depression, senility, poor digestion, atherosclerosis, blood vessel problems, drug addiction, relief of pain, and many others. When Ralph M. Heinicke received his doctorate in biochemistry from the University of Minnesota, he wanted to escape from those cold Minnesota winters and so he took a job with Dole Pineapple Company in Hawaii. His first assignment was to develop a method to extract the enzyme that caused pineapple to prevent gelatin deserts from setting up. He found it was an enzyme called bromelain and in due time he and his coworkers found a way to extract it. Soon the Dole Company found that every day they had over a thousand pounds of this crude bromelain enzyme extract left over as a waste product. At the time it had no commercial value, and so the company president asked Dr. Heinicke to see if he could find some use for this material. Eventually he found it was a proteolytic enzyme that had some medical applications. He worked with Smith-Kline and the Rohr pharmaceutical companies to expand its medical use.

In order to get FDA approval for this enzyme he had to refine the crude bromelain extract down to an extremely pure protease enzyme. Much to his and the drug companies amazement, the more pure the enzyme became, the less beneficial it was in many of its applications. Eventually, in its purest state, it had only 5% of its original potency for many of its uses. Dr. Heinicke was then asked to find what it was they were removing that had given the crude bromelain extract all of its power. Meanwhile the giant Japanese drug company Toshiba had also launched a 3 year, 3 million dollar program to find the same answer. At the end of that time they had used up all their money and not found the answer. Not one to give up easily, Dr. Heinicke continued his research and eventually found to his great surprise that the active ingredient was not a protein, carbohydrate or fat, but a substance known as an alkaloid.

Alkaloids are one of the most important classes of phytochemicals known, and are a major source from which many modern medicines are drawn from Nature. By isolating this alkaloid into a pure state, he was able to identify is exact chemical structure. Because it could be reduced to a dry crystalline structure he decided to use the latin prefix "Xero" meaning "dry" as the first part of its name. Since it was also an alkaline compound he tacked on the suffix "ine" indicating its alkaline nature. When the prefix and suffix are combined it gives us the word "Xeronine" which means, "a dry alkaline compound". Which is the descriptive name he chose for the compound he discovered.

Eventually he found that Xeronine was a very important biochemical in the human body and essential for good health. So essential that the human body has a limited ability to manufacture it from the raw material found in certain fruits. Like many other biochemicals produced in the body, he found that positive thoughts and emotions, along with exposure to art, music, nature and spiritual experiences increased its production. While negative thoughts, emotions and stressful experiences suppressed it's production. He also learned that as the body's level of Xeronine declined with age, stress and a poor diet, the level of health and recovery declined right along with it.

An epidemiologist at the University of Minnesota, Dr. John Potter, told Newsweek Magazine, "At almost every step along the pathway to cancer, phytochemicals slow up or reverse the process." Most of these phytochemicals studied so far are found in ordinary vegetables and culinary herbs. The problem is the amount in these foods is so low that only if you eat a lot of them for a long time will they give you protection. Researchers at the University of Hawaii School of Medicine introduced cells containing a strain of lung cancer known as Lewis Lung Carcinoma into a group of mice especially bred to be highly susceptible to this type of cancer. Within 9 to 12 days the mice which were given no Noni were all dead as a result of the growth of the tumor. However, another group of these same mice were given an extract of the Noni fruit on five different occasions. At the end of the 12 days when all the untreated mice were dead, those given the Noni were still alive and doing well! At the end of 24 days, the Noni treated mice were all still going strong, this was a 100% extension of life! Actually, 40% which is 9 out of the 22 mice given the Noni, survived for more than 50 days. This is a life span more than 4 times greater than the longest living mouse not receiving the Noni. This an incredible achievement! Now remember, these were not just any mice, these mice were specifically bred to succumb to this form of cancer. In this regard, they were "genetically doomed" to be cancer victims. Yet in spite of this, a simple Noni extract gave these mice as much as 4 times the life span of their untreated relatives.

HOW NONI DID IT

I know you are as excited about what you just read as I am, but the best part may be how the Noni made this incredible achievement possible! Most people would just assume something in the Noni had killed the cancer cells. But like all good scientists, the researchers at the University of Hawaii School of Medicine wanted to know exactly how Noni had accomplished its miracle. What they found was quite surprising, and very important. They discovered that there was nothing in their Noni extract that killed the cancer cells. What they discovered was that there was a polysaccharide compound (6-D-glucopyranose pentaacetate) found in the Noni that INCREASED THE ABILITY OF THE IMMUNE SYSTEM TO PRODUCE CHEMICALS THAT ENHANCED THE KILLING POWER OF THE WHITE BLOOD CELLS.

Do you realize the great significance of that discovery? You see white blood cells have to kill many things besides cancer cells. They have to defend us against virus, bacteria, yeast, ameba, parasites and all types of invaders. Since this Noni polysaccharide worked by increasing the overall killing power of the white blood cells, this means it will most likely enhance that same killing power against any invader. It indicates Noni is very likely an overall immune enhancing substance that may provide that little extra which gives you the winning edge when some invading organism attacks your body.

MORE CANCER FIGHTING POWER IS FOUND

Japanese scientists were looking for a substance to fight cancer. They searched through over 500 different extracts from tropical plants looking for something which would inhibit the growth of RAS cancer cells. These are a particular type of fast growing and very malignant cancer cells that are hard to stop. Reporting in the journal Cancer Letters, the scientists stated that the Noni extract was by far the most effective at inhibiting and normalizing RAS transformed cancer cells. RAS is a normal part of the cell structure in every cell. It is a small protein which is part of the RNA of the cell and encodes for the reproduction of the cell. Only when it is activated by a carcinogenic protein within the cell does it trigger the cells to reproduce wildly. If you can turn off this uncontrolled RAS activity, you stop the cancers growth.8, 9. What the Japanese scientists found was that one of the phytochemicals in the Noni extract does exactly that! They found that it was the phytochemical in the Noni extract which goes by the fancy name of Damnacanthal that does this. When they added the Noni extract to RAS activated cancer cells they observed them daily for five days. What they saw was incredible!

They reported that slowly, day by day the cells began to change their morphology (cell structure) back to normal. It is only on the basis of this kind of hard science that doctors can rely upon the ability of a plant extract to produce the return to good health now being seen clinically by people who have been struggling with cancer. No one knows if Noni will produce a return to good health for any specific person, but the research shows there is a scientific basis for believing that it is possible. Ancient peoples of what is now known as French Polynesia , colonized islands throughout the South Pacific . In the islands of the South Pacific the plant is known as Nonu , in Samoa and Tonga. Nono in Raratonga and Tahiti, and Noni in the Marquesas Islands and Hawaii. Here it has become and integral part of the Polynesian culture. An important source of food, the fruit of the Morinda citrifolia tree has been used for centuries as a food source.

The Morinda citrifolia plant flourishes in the lush and unspoiled islands of French Polynesia , the best known of these islands is Tahiti . It is considered to be one of the most beautiful plants in the islands. It is a valued addition to a traditional Polynesian garden. The plant reaches heights of 15-20 feet and yields fruit year-round. The blossoms of the tree are a creamy white color. Cancer and DMBA-DNA adduct formation?

DMBA is 7,12-Dimethylbenz(a)anthracene is a powerful organ-specific laboratory carcinogen.[2] Also known as 7,12-dimethylbenz[α]anthracene or DMBA, this substance is widely used in many research laboratories studying cancer.

DMBA serves as a tumor initiator by making necessary mutations. Tumor promotion can be induced with treatments of 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA) in some models of two-stage carcinogenesis.[3] This allows for a greatly accelerated rate of tumor growth, making many cancer studies possible.

FYI, DMBA is a cancer/tumour inducer. DMBA-DNA adducts are the result of the binding of DMBA metabolites to DNA, and these markers are what researchers use as a measure of incidence of cancer.

1st POINT:

It is believed to regulate the rigidity and shape (hence the function) of specific proteins, affecting a wide range of physiological reactions, including repair to damaged cells; enhanced host immune system involving macrophages and/or lymphocytes(1); and analgesic affects(2).
Proxeronine travels into the cytoplasm of the body’s cells and accumulates in their Golgi Apparatus (GA). Within the GA, Proxeronine combines with different body biochemicals such as hormones, enzymes, serotonin, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and other elements. The combination of Proxeronine and the other biochemicals are in specific and varied combinations depending on how the body’s homeostasis is out of alignment.
The GA acts as an “assembler” combining just the right amounts of Proxeronine with the tight proportions of the different biochemicals. The GA then packages it, addresses it, and mails it to the particular “sick” cell addresses. The blood acts as the highway from the GA to the “sick cells”. Once the specific package arrives, it is opened and all of the inside constituents are released in close proximity to the “sick” cell. Then proxeronine, under the influence of Proxeronase, ( a substance found naturally in the body) is converted to xeronine (an alkaloid), Xeronine combines with the correct mixtures of biochemicals to create the specific adaptogen for that particular “sick” cell.

Japanese scientists found was that one of the phytochemicals in the Noni extract does exactly that! They found that it was the phytochemical in the Noni extract which goes by the fancy name of Damnacanthal that does this. When they added the Noni extract to RAS activated cancer cells they observed them daily for five days. What they saw was incredible!

They reported that slowly, day by day the cells began to change their morphology (cell structure) back to normal. It is only on the basis of this kind of hard science that doctors can rely upon the ability of a plant extract to produce the return to good health now being seen clinically by people who have been struggling with cancer. How Xeronine is made in the body

Dr. Ralph Heinicke pioneered the study of the alkaloid Xeronine. Xeronine is produce in the body from the building blocks Proxeronine and Proxeronase. These building blocks are abundant in the juice of the Morinda citrifolia fruit.

Xeronine is a relatively small alkaloid that is physiologically active in the picogram range. (Editorial note: a picogram is one trillionth of a gram.) It occurs in practically all healthy cells of plants, animals and microorganisms. However, the amount of free alkaloid is minute, and is well below the limits of normal chemical analytical techniques.

Even though Noni fruits have a negligible amount of free xeronine, they contain appreciable amounts of the precursor of xeronine. This precursor, which I have named "proxeronine", is a strange molecule. The molecular weight is relatively large, namely about 16,000. In contrast to most plant colloids, this colloid contains neither sugars, nor amino acids, nor nucleic acids. Thus most biochemists have overlooked this relatively abundant molecule which occurs in most tissues.

Noni fruits also contain the inactive form of the enzyme that releases xeronine from proxeronine. Unless this pro-enzyme becomes properly activated, however, Noni juice will cause few physiological reactions.

Fortunately, if Noni juice is drunk on an empty stomach, the critical pro-enzyme escapes digestion in the stomach and enters the intestines. Here the chances are high that it may become activated.

Many years of research are still required to demonstrate convincingly how xeronine functions at the molecular level in a cell. In the meantime I can suggest certain hypotheses which can act as a guide in planning experiments. I am basing these hypotheses both on clinical results with bromelain pills as well as on a limited number of laboratory and animal experiments carried out with pure xeronine.

I am proposing that the primary function of xeronine is to regulate the rigidity and shape of specific proteins. Since these proteins have different functions, we have the usual clinical situation where administering one simple drug causes an unbelievably wide range of physiological responses.

I believe that each tissue has cells which contain proteins, which in turn have receptor sites for the absorption of xeronine. Certain of these proteins are the inert forms of enzymes which require absorbed xeronine to become active. Other proteins become potential receptor sites for hormones after they react with xeronine. Thus the action of ginseng, bromelain and Noni in making a person feel well is probably caused by xeronine converting certain brain receptor proteins into active sites for the absorption of the endorphin, the well being hormones. Other proteins form pores through membranes in the intestines, the blood vessels, and other body organs. Absorbing xeronine on these proteins changes the shape of the pores and thus affects the passage of molecules through the membranes. Thus the action of bromelain, Noni, and ginseng in improving digestion may be ascribable to this action. These are just a few of the many exciting actions of this newly discovered alkaloid. Since Noni is a potential source of this alkaloid, Noni juice can be a valuable herbal supplement.

Another critical problem in using Noni juice as a health supplement is timing. If the juice is drunk on a full stomach, it will have very little beneficial action.

The pepsin and acid in the stomach will destroy the enzyme that liberates xeronine. For a seriously sick person, drinking the juice on an empty stomach rarely poses a problem because the patient is too sick to want to eat anything.

However, for the average person who wants to drink Noni juice as a health tonic, timing is critical. I would recommend drinking 100 ml of Noni juice a half-hour before breakfast. At this time the juice will pass rapidly through the stomach and into the intestines, where it may be converted into the active enzyme. At any other time of the day, especially at meal times, the primary effects of drinking Noni juice will be psychological and caloric. Because of the strong flavor, the psychological effect might not necessarily be positive! To obtain the maximum effect of the active ingredient in Noni, I would recommend also that Noni juice not be drunk with coffee, tobacco or alcohol. At times the combination of these materials and Noni can give some unexpected side effects. At other times the combination merely lowers the potentially beneficial effect of xeronine.

Although the islanders recommended both green fruit and ripe fruit, my personal recommendation would be to use only the green fruit. The green fruit has more of the potentially valuable components and less of the undesirable flavor.

In light of the new information on the action of xeronine, what are some of the possible applications of Noni juice? First I should make the caveat that for all of the possible applications which I am listing, one must always add the phrase "some types but not other types."

What is the function of this essential nutrient?
1. It activates dormant enzymes that are found in our small intestines, this is very important, since we eat too many foods that are lacking in sufficient quantities of enzymes. Our bodies need specific enzymes to enjoy efficient digestion, calm nerves and to increase our physical and emotional energy.

2. Xeronine protects and keeps the shape and suppleness of protein molecules so that they may be able to pass through the cell walls and be used to form healthy tissue. Without these nutrients going into the cell, the cell can not perform its job efficiently. Without pro-xeronine to produce xeronine our cells and then our complete body suffers.

3. The enzyme xeronine which the body produces from the pro-xeronine found in the Noni plant, also assists in enlarging the membrane pores of the cells. This enlargement allows for larger chains of peptides (amino acids or proteins) to be admitted into the cell and to feed us better. If these chains are not used they become wast and this precious source of energy is lost by going to fat or being eliminated.

4. Every cell in the body is like a house with doors and windows. When you have to drive a car into a garage you need to open the large door. The same goes on in our body if we have to absorb a larger protein molecule, we need to open a larger pore if we are to use it. Xeronine, which is made from pro-xeronine, assists in the enlarging the pores and allowing better absorption of nutrients.

Who is Dr. Ralph Heinicke?

Dr. Heinicke’s father lost his sight in his early twenties and suffered from a rare joint disease that left him bed-ridden and eventually led to his death at 34. Dr. Heinicke admits that his father’s early death was a great motivator in his future work as a scientist.

After graduating from Cornell University in 1936 with a special interest in plant physiology, Dr. Heinicke joined the army and continued his education in electrical engineering at the University of Kentucky, Lexington. It was here that he met his wife, Ann, whom he married after an eighteen-month courtship.

Shortly after getting married, Ralph was shipped out on assignment and stationed in China, Burma, and India. He took every opportunity he could to interact with people and their cultures. (It was in part this interest in culture that eventually led Ralph to explore the traditional uses of noni.)

Later Ralph went on to receive his Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of Minnesota. He lived in Hawaii from 1950 to 1986 doing research for the Dole Pineapple Company, the Pineapple Research Institute, and the University of Hawaii. During this time he was published in several scientific journals for his pioneering research on enzymes found in plants and fruits. This same research led Ralph to search out other food sources that could be used as supplements and that offered real, substantial benefits.

While in Hawaii, Ralph became fascinated with all the stories and traditions surrounding the noni plant. “I feel strongly that as scientists we dismiss the cultural aspect because we assume it is not relevant. Heritage actually contains a lot of very specific information that we must simply learn to interpret. For example, a simple story may hide a recipe for picking and handling fruit during the appropriate season.”

After several meaningful discoveries, Ralph became convinced of noni’s potential to improve health on many different levels. Shortly after, he dedicated his life to the exploration and development of noni.

He has since been dedicated to continuing noni research as a key member of TNI’s advisory board. Dr. Heinicke has spent most of his life studying noni and the nature of its healthful properties. He still makes speaking appearances at key scientific conventions and TNI events.

Dr. Ralph Heinicke, a leading biochemist in the United States, made a critical discovery while studying pineapple enzymes. An alkaloid he later named xeronine was found to be essential to proper cell function in the body and sustained health.

Dr. Heinicke discovered that xeronine is produced in the large intestine from key building blocks that must be present in the correct amounts.

Cancer preventive effect of Morinda citrifolia (Noni)?

Morinda citrifolia (Noni) has been extensively used in folk medicine by Polynesians for over 2,000 years. It has been reported to have broad therapeutic effects, including anticancer activity, in both clinical practice and laboratory animal models. The mechanism for these effects remains unknown.

The hypothesis that Morinda citrifolia possesses a cancer preventive effect at the initiation stage of carcinogenesis was studied. Our preliminary data indicated that 10% Tahitian Noni Liquid Dietary Supplement or Tahitian Noni Juice (TNJ), made from Morinda citrifolia fruit by Morinda Inc, in drinking water for one week was able to prevent DMBA-DNA adduct formation. The levels of DMBA-DNA adducts were reduced by 30% in the heart, 41% in the lung, 42% in the liver, and 80% in the kidney of female SD rats.

Even more dramatic results were obtained in male C57 BL-6 mice: 10% TNJ was able to reduce DMBA-DNA adduct formation by 60% in the heart, 50% in the lung, 70% in the liver, and 90% in the kidney. In order to explore the mechanism of this preventive effect, the antioxidant activity of TNJ was examined in vitro by lipid hydroperoxide (LPO) and tetrazolium nitroblue (TNB) assays. In the LPO assay, LPO oxidizes leucomethylene blue to methylene blue in the presence of hemoglobin.

The resultant blue color was quantified at 660 nm spectrophotometrically. In the TNB assay, superoxide anion radicals (SAR) reduce TNB into formazan blue that was also measured by absorption at 602 nm. TNJ showed a dose-dependent inhibition of both LPO and SAR in our system. The antioxidant activity of TNJ was compared to the effects of vitamin C, grape seed powder (GSP), and pycnogenol (PYC) at the daily dose per serving level recommended by U.S.RDAs or manufacturers.

The results suggest that prevention of carcinogen-DNA adduct formation and the antioxidant activity of TNJ may contribute to the cancer preventive effect of Morinda citrifolia.

My name is Diana Morrell. I am 56 years old. On December 23rd 1994 I heard the words that every woman fears. "From all the indications it appears you have breast cancer. As soon as Christmas is over we will have to do a biopsy to be sure."

I don’t need to tell you that Christmas was not a happy time that year. On Dec. 27th I had the biopsy and it came back positive. Fortunately I had a wonderful young doctor who advised me to have a lumpectomy and chemotherapy. Thus saving me the further trauma of loosing my breast. On January 7th I learned that the cancer was in my lymph nodes. I went ahead and endured chemotherapy. Yes all my hair fell out and it was a very difficult time.

During this time I took lots of vitamins minerals and even used the mushroom tea that was so popular at that time. Another problem that I had was depression. Many factors caused this and I was finally given Zoloft to help me snap out of my poor state of mind. I know you are asking, "Why didn’t she just take Noni juice?" If you will look at the dates you will see that Noni was not available to the general public at that time.

It wasn’t until November 1996 that a good friend of mine, Jacqueline Miller, called and told me about Noni. Always one to try anything I feel will help my health I immediately bought a bottle. Within a few weeks I noticed I was feeling better but it took a couple of months for me to realize that it was the Noni that was making the difference. My doctors are amazed at how well I have done the last few years and how well my blood count has gone back to normal. I also was able to get off the Zoloft two years ago and have never felt the need to go back on. I’m now sure that I could have gotten off sooner but things were going so well that I was afraid to change anything.

NONI RESEARCH : Lab Test on Mice show Noni Helps The Body Fight Off Cancer!

Anti Cancer Activity of Morinda Citrifolia on Intraperitoneally Implanted Lewis Lung Carcinoma in Syngenic Mice A. Hirazumi, E. Furusawa, S.C. Chou & Y. Hokama Proc. West. Pharmacol. Soc. 37: 145-146 (1994)

This is a significant study by a team of researchers from the University of Hawaii led by Annie Hirazumi. Ms. Hirazumi became interested in the healing properties of Noni after two prior experiences. Her father once gave Noni juice to a sick friend; and later, she administered Noni juice to a pet dog who was dying. The dog miraculously recovered, and Ms Hirazumi became determined to learn more about this incredible fruit.

The study was conducted on live laboratory mice (type C57BL/6) specifically identified as being acutely receptive to Lewis Lung Carcinoma (LLC) cells. The mice were injected with active cancer cells (LLC). Untreated, the mice died 9-12 days after injection due to advanced tumor growth. A second group of infected mice was treated with Noni juice in five separate daily treatments.

This group demonstrated a significantly increased life span, from 105--123%, with 9 of 22 mice surviving more than 50 days. For verification purposes, the experiment was repeated with similar results. The research team concluded that Noni juice acts as an anti-cancer agent by indirectly enhancing the cancer host's immune system of macrophages and/or lymphocytes.

DETAILS:

1. Researchers at the University of Hawaii School of Medicine introduced cells containing a strain of lung cancer known as Lewis Lung Carcinoma into a group of mice especially bred to be highly susceptible to this type of cancer.

2. Within 9 to 12 days the mice which were given no Noni were all dead as a result of the growth of the tumor. However, another group of these same mice were given an extract of the Noni fruit on five different occasions.

3. At the end of the 12 days when all the untreated mice were dead, those given the Noni were still alive and doing well! At the end of 24 days, the Noni treated mice were all still going strong, this was a 100% extension of life! Actually, 40% which is 9 out of the 22 mice given the Noni, survived for more than 50 days.

4. This is a lifespan more than 4 times greater than the longest living mouse not receiving the Noni. This an incredible achievement! Now remember, these were not just any mice, these mice were specifically bred to succumb to this form of cancer.

5. In this regard, they were "genetically doomed" to be cancer victims. Yet in spite of this, a simple Noni extract gave these mice as much as 4 times the life span of their untreated relatives.
